Tying the Catalpa Worm Fly with Michael Verduin
Michael Verduin demonstrates tying his Catalpa Worm Fly, a copy of a caterpillar that inhabits Catalpa Trees in the South.
Back in 2003 - 21 years ago - I had the opportunity to watch and record a master fly tier demonstrating one of his original flies - the Catalpa Worm Fly. Michael Verduin was a master at fly tying with a love of warm water flies. His flies had a bit of realism but were able to be tied by anyone with decent skills. Unfortunately he passed away about 6 months after filming this. This particular video was put on a DVD with a limited distribution but now I feel that it should be shared with everyone who knew Michael or appreciates the skills he had. I hope you enjoy this oldie.
I apologize for the audio. This was one of the very first videos I recorded and the audio is not great. But you can hear and understand him despite the background noise.

cool
This is a beautiful tie! It was nice to meet you yesterday at Bass Pro's FFI show. I can hardly wait to tie your lizard! 👍
Just curious but would it be easier to attach the eye if you put the hook in the vise on the shank instead of how you have it here ?
Nice
I have got to try this with some of that silver metalic ribbon
Thanks buddy good looking fiber make nice fly's
Excellent 👍 i like that what is soft text who makes it . Nice 👍
doesn't this material absorb water?
No it doesn't. At least no more than Puglisi Hair.
does he have a youtube channel
Great video. But Please just focus on the closeups - when the camera is so far away we can’t see what Bob is even referring to
Well done
Thanks Brother 🎉 👍🏻💫👍🏻
Reminds me so much of the picket pin
JUST DYNAMIC,, OUTSTANDING DEDICATION,, GOD BLESS,,,
Hello John great work nice to see how you this Sea Bass Herring build thank you for sharing
Very cool. I like that your are using everyday materials, not over-priced "fly tying" material.
Sweet
Nice fly! Would loved to have seen it in its entirety at the end Mr Dave..
Interesting tie Mr Bruce. I buy No. 2 chenille and I’m limited in what material colors I can have made for me in sizes 00 to 12. You’ve help me to discover the technique of the dubbing loop which looks to be a No. 4 when twisting two No. 2 to accomplish the same with the dubbing loop technique.👍
She is a good tyer!
👏👏👏👏
That's a simple fly to tie, but at the same time it looks so effective. All the best.
For at least a century, a peacock herl body with what we call a soft hackle collar has been considered a top fly. It’s one everyone should have, and Ive used them in all sizes to good effect.
Will is an amazing fly tyer!
Nice looking fly!
Mr. Feliu I'm an almost fly tier. also older than you and I had a friend from Belen school in Cuba named Oscar Feliu. That was in third grade 1955. Is this you?
Unfortunately, Oscar passed away unexpectedly several years ago and is unable to answer your question.
Where can I buy this
Very nice fly
Will it work on a salmon?
What did you put on the black hair
It's a material called Softex and is available at many fly shops. It's a flexible coating that will hold the fibers in place without adding a lot of weight. You'll notice that Ron used it sparingly - just enough to keep the fibers from becoming unruly.
How do you make the template to cut out the spoon after you take the epoxy shape
I just found your sight today , Very Glad I did ! Your technique is different, but the end result is a Beautiful, well balanced, great looking Fly / jig ! Thank you for sharing ! Take Care and Be Safe
Hello; is it also good for chubs?
Nice looking fly. I've always called them Girdle Bug flies but I use black body and white legs so this might be a different fly.
Super👍
Amazing! You can glitter to it or maybe even strips of flashabou, etc. sky is the limit!
Essa e boa pra traira
Pourriez-vous la liste de matériel que vous avez emploie S V P MERCI excellent Montage merci
Bob you are a genius to think up the Clouser minnow! It’s such an effective fly in both salt and fresh water.
The lip addition is genius!! thank you for teaching this new fly there!
If it ain't Chartruse,it ain't no use.
Love the fiber repack tip with the paper✌
Can it be custom colored?
I've never tried dying it but since it comes in many colors it must be able to be dyed. That said I've found that blending different colors works well to create different shades.
@@FlyFishVideo Thank you
Does this material have a tendency to float like Congo Hair or does it tend to sink?
I find it fairly neutral so the weight of a hook sinks it easily once wet. Similarly a piece of foam will float it easily.
thanks for the lesson Don, nice work...
Great video
Thanks. Glad you enjoyed it.
Originally tied for smallmouth, has grown immensely, great saltwater fly
We don’t care tie the fly n shut your pie hole
YES! The original Clouser Minnow has the dumbbell eyes one third the way down the hook shank rather than just behind the hook eye. Good to see the originator of the pattern show us the correct way of positioning the eyes.....
Como encontrar no mercado
Comprei o meu em uma loja de artesanato, mas está disponível na Amazon como fio artesanal ou cordão de macramê.
